What Are The Main Landscape Design Elements?
When planning your new garden. It helps to consider the following elements:
HARDSCAPING AREAS – Stone paths, retaining walls, water features, built in seating areas, paving & timber decking.
SOFTSCAPING & PLANTING – Consider the seasonal aspects of plants to make your garden a success. This includes lifespan, growth habits, speed of growth, annual or perennial flowers, deciduous or evergreen plants
LOCATION – Topographical features such as slopes, hills and rocks can affect the design of your garden
MICROCLIMATE– Consider your garden’s & suburb’s microclimate. Factors such as strong wind, direct sunlight/filtered sun will impact the plant selection and placement.
SOIL QUALITY – It’s hard to have healthy plant growth without the right balance of nutrients in the soil. This can be improved with compost, peat or manure. The balance will depend on your soil ie. sandy, clay or organically rich.
IRRIGATION – Not all plants thrive when overwatered. It is best to group plants together that have a similar water requirement. Installing a waterwise irrigation system on a timer is also recommended.
PROPERTY BOUNDARIES – The main boundaries of your garden design include hedges, walls & fences. Privacy screening is also an important consideration for Sydney urban gardens.
GARDEN SURFACES – In Sydney’s hot climate, we recommend mulch in the garden beds to reduce water evaporation. There are many varieties available include woodchips, loose gravel or small pebbles.

LOW MAINTENANCE GARDENS – Your garden will start out looking healthy, but ongoing maintenance is recommended to keep it looking healthy.
