Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the giant white bird of paradise or wild banana, is a species of banana-like plants with erect woody stems. The up-to 1.8m long leaves are grey-green to light-green and arranged like a fan at the top of the stems. It prefers rich, moist soils with good drainage in full sun to part shade. Strelitzia nicolai is commonly grown both indoors as a featured pot-plant and outdoors as well, in the case of warmer climates. The plant tolerates light frost. It is slow growing when potted indoors, but very fast growing when planted in the ground in full sun. All around a tough, easy to care for tropical plant with gigantic lush banana-like leaves, it can be a feature in any home. They are available in multiple sizes and with the option of a double (conjoined) or single plant in each container.
